The Sisters

The Sisters Workshop

The poet Amy Lowell, plagued with self-doubt at her work, ponders the difficulties of being a female poet. She imagines herself going back to meet three of her predecessors: Sappho, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Emily Dickinson. She falls in love with Sappho’s uninhibited passion, chafes against Mrs. Browning’s Victorian sensibilities, and keeps pace with Emily’s lightning-fast wit. She tries to bring them all into the same dream-space to ponder whether she could really measure up to any of them; however, Emily remains stuck in her own doubts measuring herself against Mrs. Browning. The other poets pull her from her reverie, and all four come together in the recognition that they are one continued line of the same creative family. Amy bids her visions a fond, grateful farewell as she returns to her work, her poetic inspiration renewed.

Families and children are warmly welcome to join in the magic, with special activity booklets available for younger audience members!
